Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a respected part of the code of ethics. Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors and Psychologists understand that for people to feel comfortable discussing personal and revealing information, they need a safe place to talk without fear of that information leaving the room.

Laws are also in place to protect your privacy. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) contains a privacy rule that creates national standards to protect individuals' medical records and personal health information, including information about psychotherapy and mental health. Please be aware that a therapist is required by law to suspend confidentiality in situations of suspected child abuse, potential harm to self or others, and in some instances under court order.
